Structuring

Also known as Smurfing.

The act of breaking up large sums of money into small deposits through offshore 'shell' companies and anonymous bank accounts into order to avoid certain record keeping and reporting requirements. Typically each of the smaller transactions is below some statutory limit, which does not require a financial institution to file a report with a government agency.
