Emigration
The act of leaving one's native country to settle in another. Emigration to a tax haven or to a country offering special retirement incentives may serve to break totally or in part the link between a taxpayer and the high tax jurisdiction from which they are emigrating. In most cases, it is the change in the place of residence which is material; however, sometimes a change in domicile or even citizenship (for example, in the case of United States citizens) may be necessary. Exchange controls or anti-avoidance provisions may delay or render extremely difficult the coming into effect of the fiscal advantages of the act of emigration.
